weekend snapshots - a dc family wedding
August 3, 2010 this past weekend i flew down to Washington DC, for my cousin's wedding. i arrived late thursday night, said hello to the few still up, then crashed, for it was going to be a busy weekend.

friday, the day before the wedding began with flowers and ended with national monuments. buckets of flowers and greenery for the church arrangements filled my ciocia's (aunt in polish) basement. after watching my mother make the prototype for the little arrangements, the flower committee each grabbed a plastic tube. 1} wrap with tulle. 2} decorate with lacey flowers and pearls. 3} fill the oasis with roses, hydrangea, mountain mint, vines which we tricked into curving using wire, and much more. after finishing the 10 arrangements i helped my mother work on the large ones to go next to the alter. two 40" wide by 3 feet high lovely arrangements. large pink hydrangeas filled the center while orange lilies cascaded down around them. lush pink roses dotted all sides and pink snap dragons shot out of the top. what lovely works of art.

after our work it was time to play and enjoy the city, so a couple of us headed over to the pentagon memorial. it was rather peaceful listening to the water that trickled beneath the benches honoring each person that died on that tragic day.

for dinner that night the szewczyk gang met at matchbox pizza. flo was looking cute like always in her new outfit - fairy wings and a tutu. when told they were going to dinner that was what she wanted to wear. oh the joys of being young.

after filling our stomachs with pizza we headed out to the streets of DC. Our first stop was a friend's apartment where we got to the view the city from the roof top. Then it was monument time. as we marched down national mall we saw the capital building glowing in the distance, the impressively tall washington monument, and the world war II memorial with the lincoln memorial shining in the distance. unfortunately my night ended there due to stomach pains from dinner so i headed back to the hotel, said hello to those at the bar, and went to bed.

feeling much better saturday morning aaron and i meet up with my aunt and uncle and parents at starbucks for some coffee and treats. it was a beautiful day so we decided to spend it walking around the neighborhood, embassy row, which was full of lovely homes and buildings.

and then it was time. the wedding was held at the dahlgren chapel in georgetown and what a perfect setting. i loved the patio area right outside the quaint chapel. inside my mother's large floral arrangements lit up the space. wow were they breathtaking. the ceremony was very traditional but mixed within the seriousness there were a few light jokes. and isabel, the bride, looked fantastic; glowing as she walked in, smile so wide, and in a dress more beautiful than any i had seen. back at the hotel we finished off the night with eating, dancing, and drinking. it was quite the celebration. aaron put it best the next day when he said "your family sure knows how to put on a wedding" or something like that.

cheers to isabel & mike! i wish you many years of happiness. and to my family, i love you all.
